United Presbyterian Church, Laramie Wyoming.

These are photographs of the United Presbyterian Church in Laramie.  I'm unsure of the age of the church, but it's a large modern structure with some interesting traditional elements.

St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and Campus Center, Laramie Wyoming

This is the Lutheran St. Andrew's Church and Campus Center in Laramie.  It's actually not very far away from another Lutheran church in Laramie, but presumably was built here to service the needs of Lutheran students at UW.

Laramie Valley Chapel, Laramie Wyoming.

 

This is the Laramie Valley Chapel, a Baptist church which is an extraordinary large example of a Prairie Gothic church.  The church must be relatively new as it did not exist when I lived in Laramie, although that's quite a few years ago.

Muslim Students Association, Laramie Wyoming

This is a bad photograph of the former church in Laramie Wyoming which is now the Muslim Students Association.  The church in the background is St. Paul's United church of Christ.  This building was clearly originally a Christian church, but I don't know the history of the building, so I don't know what it was.

For classification purposes, I'm listing this under the label "mosque" but I don't think it really is. Rather, its a center. The Muslim students at UW have had a center for quite some time, but up until this building was acquired I do not think they had one that was purpose built as a religious building.  Indeed, when I was a student at UW their center was in an apartment building even though there were a lot of Muslim students at that time.

This photo was taken from my truck as this is in a residential neighborhood and, given the context of the times, stopping to take a better photograph probably would have looked a bit odd, so this bad photo will have to suffice.

St. Paul's Newman Center, Laramie Wyoming.

This is St. Paul's Newman Center in Laramie Wyoming. This large church and Newman Center office is fairly difficult to photograph, due to the vegetation, and its long length.  It's located directly across the street from the University of Wyoming dorms on Grand Avenue.

Zion Lutheran Church, Laramie Wyoming

This is Zion Lutheran Church in Laramie Wyoming.

Church Ruin, West Laramie, Wyoming

This striking church ruin is located in West Laramie, Wyoming

The structure is clearly that of a classic Gothic style church, which was constructed out of stone and cement.  The structure of the church itself would tend to indicate that it was likely built in a classic Catholic church manner, which would indicate here that the church was likely built with a Catholic or Episcopalian congregation in mind, although its location might possibly indicate that it was built as a chapel for the Territorial Prison in Laramie.  The structure is very old, and its been in ruins for as long as I personally can recall.  It's now located on the grounds of a farm, but at the time it was built it would have been actually several miles outside of Laramie, and indeed it would have been at least three miles from the territorial prison.

This church is a mystery to me, and if anyone knows what it was, I'd appreciate knowing.

Emmanuel Apostolic Temple, Laramie Wyoming

This is an older church located in West Laramie, Wyoming.  The sign on the church identifies it as the Emmanuel Apostolic Temple. Given the appearance of the church, and its location, it was almost certainly built for some other Protestant congregation many years ago, but I otherwise know nothing about it.

St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Laramie Wyoming.

This is St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Laramie, Wyoming, which was originally founded in 1886 as Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische St. Paulus Gemeinde.  It was originally a German speaking Lutheran Church, as the name indicates. It went through a series of denominational changes since its founding, and the last German language service was offered in 1932.

First United Methodist Church Laramie, Wyoming

This is the First United Methodist Church in Laramie, Wyoming.  I know very little about this church, but the design in striking.  When I lived in Laramie I used to pass by it often on the way to school and often thought that the church resembled the keel of a ship, upturned.

Horizon Christian Fellowship, Laramie Wyoming.

This is an extremely poor photograph of an older church located directly across from the Albany County Courthouse. I was taking photographs of the courthouse at the time, and as must be with the nature of such things, I used the same opportunity to photograph this church.

This downtown Laramie Church was built as a Presbyterian church originally.

St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral, Laramie Wyoming

This is the impressive St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral in Laramie, Wyoming. This photograph was one I took in 1986, but the Cathedral appears largely the same today.

One oddity about this Cathedral is that the Episcopal diocese's offices are actually in Casper, Wyoming. While I don't know for sure, I think that this likely reflects the age of this cathedral, which is fairly old. At the time it was built, only southern Wyoming was relatively populated, and Laramie was a bit of a center of culture, being the site of the university, and of certain English interests that had entered the ranching industry and headquartered there. "Ivinson Street", for example, is named after one such family. The Cathedral does have a large administrative building, built in a Gothic style, which were likely the Diocese's administrative offices.


In later years, Cheyenne or Casper would prove to be more logical administrative centers, and in recent years the Episcopal Church apparently chose Casper as their administrative headquarters.

An adjoining courtyard to the Cathedral features a nice World War One memorial.

St. Laurence O'Toole Catholic Church, Laramie Wyoming

This is St. Laurence O'Toole Catholic Church in Laramie, Wyoming.

I'll confess that while I took this photograph, I took it quite a while back. In 1986, to be specific. But the church appears the same today, as it did then.

This parish has been in existence, under this name, for quite some time. The church depicted here, however, was dedicated in 1926. The church is one of two Catholic churches in Laramie, the other being a Newman Center.

I've always thought the roof tiles of this church to be both unique, and attractive.
