St. Leo Catholic Church, Lewistown Montana

St. Leo's history is nicely explained by the National Registry of Historic Places photograph included above.  This beautiful church is a surprise as Lewistown is not a large town, having a population of only about 6,000 people. The church is very large, and strongly resembles St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Casper Wyoming, which was built at about the same time.

St. Benedict Catholic Church, Roundup Montana

This is St. Benedict Catholic Church in Roundup Montana. The church is built in a fairly modern style, although I do not know the year of construction.  It's located directly across the street from the Musselshell County Courthouse.

The Father's House, Crow Agency Montana

This is, admittedly, an odd photograph, and not intended to be disrespectful, but it is a bit startling in a way.  This is The Father's House, a church in Crow Agency, Montana.  The church shares a parking lot with a casino, hence the sign.  From what little I can determine, this Prairie Gothic style church was built as a Catholic Church and was at some point moved to this location.

We unfortunately did not get the opportunity to stop and take a proper photograph, but in the future, if we get the chance, we will.  The reason that we didn't is that a lightening caused grass fire was roaring just outside of town, and it looked as if the highway might soon be closed.

Today In Wyoming's History: June 15

An unusual one for us here today, but a shout out to another one of our blogs.  Note, on today's entry, all the churchmen listed in the opening statement of the Magna Carta:

Today In Wyoming's History: June 15: 1215  King John put his seal to the Magna Carta, which in its original version, stated: KNOW THAT BEFORE GOD, for the health of our soul ...

Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hudson Wyoming

This Catholic Church in Hudson Wyoming was built in 1917.  In a way, it shows the limitations of travel at the time, as Hudson is quite near Lander, where there is another Catholic Church. At the time this church was built in 1917, however, travel between the two towns would have been time consuming.

Unknown, Lander Wyoming

This building obviously was built as a church, but no longer is used as one.  I don't know what its use is today.

Photo size increased

The default photo size has been increased on this blog, and so old entries will now appear larger.  If you had a favorite church here, therefore, you  may wish to go back and check it out again.

As always, if you click on the photo you can get a very large version of it.

First Baptist Church, Yale Oklahoma

This is the First Baptist Church in Yale, Oklahoma. This particular church style is surprising in this context. The town of Yale is fairly small, and this is a substantially built Greek revival style church.  I don't know the age of the church, but Yale was obviously a fairly substantial town earlier in the 20th Century and this church likely dates to that period.

Fellowship Baptist Church, Yale Oklahoma

This stone church is located in the small Oklahoma town of Yale.  In some ways, its appearance causes me to suspect that it was converted to this use from some other use, but at the same time it's general shape supports the idea that it has always been a church.  Otherwise, I have no information on it.

Chapel, Ft. Phil Kearny, Wyoming

This will, undoubtedly, be an unusual entry here. Where's the church?

Well, this is where it was. This was the location of Ft. Phil Kearny's post chapel. The entire post was destroyed after the Army evacuated this post as a result of the settlement that resulted ending Red Cloud's War. The destruction of the post left the locations of fort structures, and even the dimensions of the fort, a mystery up until quite recently.

This was an Army chapel, so I don't know if we can say if it had a denomination, but the Army chaplain stationed here, who also taught at the post grade school, was a Methodist minister.

Ft. Phil Kearny was constructed in 1866.

First United Methodist, Cheyenne Wyoming

This is the last of the old downtown Cheyenne Wyoming churches that needed to be added to the blog. I'm unaware of any other of these classically styled Gothic churches in Cheyenne. This one is the First United Methodist Church, which was built in 1890.

Unidentified, Casper Wyoming

Surprising effort at converting a house into a church, located in Casper Wyoming. The architecture here also leans on Byzantine elements.

Grace Fellowship, Buffalo Wyoming

Interesting architecture which appears to lean on some Byzantine elements, located in Buffalo Wyoming

Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, Jackson Wyoming

This is the very impressive Our Lady of the Mountains in Jackson, Wyoming. The stone Romanesque church is located on a little under a city block, and unfortunately is a bit hard to photograph, or at least I did a poor job of photographing it. Added to that, the weather conditions were less than ideal at the time.

I don't know when this church was built, but I believe it was built in the last 15 years, as I can recall going to Mass in Jackson as the older church, was an impressive, but small, log structure.
Nighttime scene during Lent.

St. John's Episcopal Church, Jackson Wyoming

These photographs, taken in waning light, depict St. John's Episcopal Church in Jackson, Wyoming. There are actually two churches on the location, with this one being the new church built in 1995.

The photographs that appear below are the second church, built in 1916. This church is on the same half block as the 1995 church.
