Faith Temple, Rapid City South Dakota

This Rapid City protestant church is built in the Federal Revival style of architecture more common to courthouses.  Otherwise, I know nothing else about it.

First Presbyterian Church, Rapid City, South Dakota

Sometimes a modern architectural feature can really mess up the photographing of an older one, and this church provides such an example.

This is The First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, South Dakota. The classic Gothic style church is in the downtown region of Rapid City, and unfortunately the area is dominated by some sort of odd communications tower, which makes photographing the entire building difficult.

I don't know the age of this particular church.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Rapid City South Dakota

This striking small Episcopal Church, built in the Gothic style, is located in downtown Rapid City, South Dakota. The church was built in 1888.

St. Paul's Catholic Church, Sundance Wyoming

This is a less than ideal photograph, but I was parked in a hospital parking lot at the time I took it and had limited time to do so.  This church is St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sundance, Wyoming.  It certainly is in a picturesque setting, even if the picture is not so picturesque.

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Sundance Wyoming

This is the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Sundance, Wyoming.  This Prairie Gothic style church is obviously an older structure, but I don't know the details of it.

Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, former location of (Holy Trinity Episcopal Church), Gillette Wyoming

When I took this photograph, it was the location of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Gillette, Wyoming. As noted at the time, I had no idea how old the structure of the church was. An addition, not visible here, to the back side looked to be a rectory.

Since I took this photo, the Church structure sold to the Antiochian Orthodox parish in Gillette, and this Church is now Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church.  I don't know where the Episcopal parish formerly located here is now located.  The pastor of this church informs me that it has been redone inside, in keeping with Orthodox traditions, and he was graciously allow me to photograph the interior in the future.

The former location of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Gillette Wyoming

I'm updating, and reposting, this entry, as I was traveling through Gillette recently and found that this location was for sale, and therefore pretty clearly no longer the location of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church.  Emailing the pastor, I was provided with the new location.  I'll keep this entry up, as this was a church, but it is no longer the location of this church.

The old text noted:

This unusual church is Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Gillette, Wyoming. It's very obviously in a converted storefront, but I have included it as the church went to the extent of construction a dome, as we might expect to see on an Orthodox Church.

This Antiochian Orthodox Church is the only Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wyoming, and one of only four Orthodox churches in the state.

The Masters School, Lewistown Montana

I thought that this was a church, and I still suspect that it serves this function, but it is also a Christian school, located in Lewistown Montana. Other than that it is a school, with a very church like appearance, I do not know anything else about it.

Unidentified, Hanna Wyoming

Unidentified Prairie Gothic style church in Hanna, Wyoming.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Hanna Wyoming

This is St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hanna Wyoming, which according to the sign on the building was built in 1922.  They style is somewhat unusual, and not easily characterized, but it does have hints of Gothic styling.  The name "St. Mark's" is particularly associated with Episcopal churches in Wyoming.

Saint Mary's Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Denver Colorado

This is Saint Mary's Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Denver Colorado. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is a non-Chalcedonian (Oriental Orthodox) church. This church is located in north eastern Denver.

Temple Events Center, formally Temple Emanuel Synagogue

It took me some time to figure out what this building is, or was. Given the styling, I thought perhaps it had been built as an Eastern Rite or Orthodox church.

No, in fact it was a synagogue. This building was the Temple Emanuel Synagogue, built in 1899. I don't know its history beyond that, but today it is an events center and available for various uses.

Photograph with the Catholic Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in the background.

Of interest, this building strongly resembles the St. Peter and St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City, which was also originally built as a synagogue.

Observant folks might notice that this post was first made in February 2011, but has now reappeared in November, 2012.  The reason is that I happened to be parked in this neighborhood a couple of days ago and had the opportunity to take photographs of this structure from the sidewalk, as opposed to from inside my vehicle, as the first photo was taken.

Off Topic: Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec?

Would anyone happen to recognize the location of this photograph?  It's been suggested to me that it may have been taken at the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre in Quebec, and I think that might be correct based upon the net photographs I've found of that location, but I'm not sure of that.

Post Chapel. Prisoner of War Camp. Ft. Robinson Nebraska

This is the second time I've posted a photo of a bare remnant of a church, but in this case, it's a much more recent structure. This is where the Post Chapel for the Prisoner of War Camp at Ft. Robinson Nebraska once was.  None of the original structures of the POW camp remain, and most is grass prairie, but where the chapel was is now this small stand of bushes.

Christ the King Catholic Church, Gering Nebraska

I did a very poor job of photographing this church, as I failed to really investigate the full architecture at the time. What is visible in this photo is the 1996 addition to the 1958 church. The spire for the 1958 church is visible.  Had I paid more attention at the time, I would have photographed that portion of the church.

Anyhow, this Catholic Church in Gering Nebraska is an interesting example of a church having been substantially added to.

St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sidney Nebraska

This is St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sidney, Nebraska.  It's a striking church that was built in 1913, although I wonder if part of the structure may have been added on to much more recently.  If so, the architects did an amazing job of keeping later construction consistent with the original design of the church.

St. Leo Catholic Church, Lewistown Montana

St. Leo's history is nicely explained by the National Registry of Historic Places photograph included above.  This beautiful church is a surprise as Lewistown is not a large town, having a population of only about 6,000 people. The church is very large, and strongly resembles St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Casper Wyoming, which was built at about the same time.

St. Benedict Catholic Church, Roundup Montana

This is St. Benedict Catholic Church in Roundup Montana. The church is built in a fairly modern style, although I do not know the year of construction.  It's located directly across the street from the Musselshell County Courthouse.

The Father's House, Crow Agency Montana

This is, admittedly, an odd photograph, and not intended to be disrespectful, but it is a bit startling in a way.  This is The Father's House, a church in Crow Agency, Montana.  The church shares a parking lot with a casino, hence the sign.  From what little I can determine, this Prairie Gothic style church was built as a Catholic Church and was at some point moved to this location.

We unfortunately did not get the opportunity to stop and take a proper photograph, but in the future, if we get the chance, we will.  The reason that we didn't is that a lightening caused grass fire was roaring just outside of town, and it looked as if the highway might soon be closed.

Today In Wyoming's History: June 15

An unusual one for us here today, but a shout out to another one of our blogs.  Note, on today's entry, all the churchmen listed in the opening statement of the Magna Carta:

Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hudson Wyoming

This Catholic Church in Hudson Wyoming was built in 1917.  In a way, it shows the limitations of travel at the time, as Hudson is quite near Lander, where there is another Catholic Church. At the time this church was built in 1917, however, travel between the two towns would have been time consuming.

Unknown, Lander Wyoming

This building obviously was built as a church, but no longer is used as one.  I don't know what its use is today.
